Only bit systems are supported, and you can install the operating system on other computers not manufactured by System76 too, considering you download the right ISO image.
Taking about the ISO image, Pop! There's no boot menu on the live images, and the installer prompts the user immediately after loading the live session. The installer is forced on the user when running the live session, but you can always minimize it in a corner if you only want to give Pop! All rights reserved. If you are an absolute newbie — all the hub-ubb is about being able to run Linux as your primary OS, with a Windows virtual machine running under Linux for everything else.
The key aspect here, though, is that you are running a computer with two graphics cards and full control over one graphics card is given to the Windows virtual machine. That means you can run games and GPU-accelerated apps like the Adobe creative suite just like they were running on a full computer, but in a virtual machine. Windows in a VM gives you great flexibility for backups, snapshots and versioning. It gives you better control over your privacy and what the operating system might be doing and it means that Windows only runs on your computer when you have to.
For this guide, we are using Pop! This system? It has two Gigabyte RTX graphics cards — plenty of horsepower.
Overkill horsepower, in fact. Any little mistake can make it difficult to access a console to fix stuff. This is where it gets a bit tricky. On So apt install grub2. Otherwise if you are using grub it will be:. I trust you know if you have an Intel or AMD system? It is entirely possible to do almost all of this through the GUI. You need not be afraid of cracking open a terminal, though, and running commands. You might have to reboot here because apt automatically adds your user to a new group to be able to run the Virtual Machine Manager properly.
I know what some of these words mean? So as part of the boot process drivers are needed for your hardware. They come from the initial ram disk, along with some configuration. Normally, you do configuration of the VFIO modules to tag the hardware you want to pass through.
Note that my devices showed up at and and was the primary card meaning we want to pass through the 4 devices under We will want to be sure that we bind vfio to all of these — they are likely to be grouped in the same IOMMU group anyway forcing all the devices to be bound to VFIO drivers for passthrough. The script will help us make sure the vfio driver has been properly attached to the device in question.
With the script created, you need to make it executable and add it to the initial ram disk so that it can do its work before the nvidia driver comes lumbering through to claim everything. I always like to verify the initial ramdisk does actually contain everything we need. This might be an un-needed step, but on my system I ram:. This tells me two important things. Bold added for emphasis — it should not say nvidia for the device you intend to pass through. But is Pop OS worth an install?
Read the Pop OS review and find out yourself. I am a proud owner of the Galago Prowhich I purchased the day they launched pre-orders this Spring and it has been my primary computer since then. I use it for everything from writing articles, to browsing the internet, to light gaming, and though the machine has its quirks I am beyond happy with it.
Back when I ordered the laptop Pop! Everything I have thrown at it has worked great on it so far, but now it is time to try something different. To preface, let me clarify that my Galago Pro was not the only computer I ran Pop!
First I installed it on my 11 inch Acer Aspire One to see how it would do on a low spec machine. After that, I installed it on my mid tier gaming tower.
That machine has an Intel i5 processor, a Nvidia graphics card, and 16 GB of ram. Finally, after a couple test drives, I fully installed it on my Galago Pro for about a week to see how I would like it. To deeper understand the OS, I decided to judge it not on my personal workflow but on the quality of experience that System 76 is trying to create.
That means, apart from installing Neofetch, I stayed away from the terminal for updates and application installations.
I used Pop!

I also refrained from customizing the UI as much as possible. Since Pop! I wanted the pure experience that System 76 is creating. System 76 announced Pop! Many people were excited about this, while others were quite disappointed, myself included.
System 76 was one of those groups of people who had high hopes for Unity 8 and the future convergence had to offer. So what is Pop! Now, I will admit, when I first heard about Pop! Before they released Pop! After some time passed, after I tested it out, and as System 76 release more and more information about their new OS I happily found that I was wrong.
What is great about Pop! At this point, it is just another distribution that honestly fragments the world of Linux just a little bit more. But what makes Pop! They are in a place where they can design these two separate pieces of personal computing in tandem.
This will undoubtedly make for a more seamless and clean interaction between the two. The future of Pop! This is awesome! Why is this not the norm at this point? It does not get more seamless than that. I tried both of these options and in my use case both worked perfectly. If this is your first time registering, please check your inbox for more information about the benefits of your Forbes account and what you can do next!
This article is the second in a series on Linux-powered gaming that aims to capture the various nuances in setup, as well as uncover potential performance variations between nine different desktop Linux operating systems. But it's more than that. It's my hope that it will guide the future development of popular Linux distributions, and serve as a roadmap for newcomers. Part 1 focused on Fedora Next up we'll take a closer look at the gaming setup and user experience of Pop!
It was created primarily to be the accompanying OS for the variety of custom Linux desktops and laptops produced by System76, and they've added some features I prefer not to live without regardless of what hardware I'm using.
Moreover, System76 ships two versions of Pop! The Nvidia ISO installs the proprietary driver so that users don't need to add a repository by hand and install it later. One of many stylistic Pop!

Gaming on Linux. Depending on who you talk to, getting stuff like Steam up and running and graphics drivers installed can be a tedious exercise, or ridiculously straightforward. That's because people don't really game on Linux. They game on Debian-based distributions or Arch-based distributions among others.
Each with their own philosophies on free as in open source and freely distributed versus non-free Steam and proprietary Nvidia drivers software. Each with their own approaches to stability, affecting which versions of drivers are available out of the box. While there are certain procedures and best practices that persist across any distro, the variances can be daunting for new users.
And that's the jumping-off point for this series. The Linux Distros Being Tested:. With Pop! No need to enable additional 3rd-party repositories software sources.Using Pop!_OS 19.10 ep. 1 - Intro, Installation, Desktop and Gaming Prep

After installing Pop! Everything worked as expected right after installation. But after rebooting a few times, I am now on Intel power saving mode. However, it seems I am stuck on the Intel side. There's no way of getting the Nvidia GPU enabled back again. Steps to reproduce if you know When I switch to NVIDIA, log out, and try to log in again, I get a black screen for a second, right after clicking the login button, and I am prompted again with the login form.
At this point, I'm stuck, because after logging in again, it's the same loop. After rebooting into BIOS F12doing nothing and continuing the normal boot sequence, everything is back to "normal" Intel graphics. Other Notes I had this problem before, but reinstalled Pop! Now I'm in the same situation so it is reproducible. Logged in, try running sudo prime-select nvidia and then reboot.
Another though, you may also want to update to the latest driver version This prevented the Nvidia driver from working. Disabling Secure Boot again, I am now on Nvidia graphics after a reboot, without touching a thing. As for the Nvidia driver, I was already on the latest version But nvidia-settings has another version:.
That is good wout. My solution was installing primus package along with all dependencies.
